What is
Mold?
Mold is a type of fungi that is
common to the environment. It is found in any area where
moisture, temperature and potential food sources can be found.
Different mold genus (family types) are more common in different
types of environments. It is important to remember when dealing
with mold issues that mold is common to our environment both
outside and inside our homes. For this reason it is important
to evaluate possible contamination from outside the home during
investigations.
Why is mold
such a problem?
Mold can cause both health
problems for humans and animals as well as building damage. It
is important to realize that each person and their reaction to
mold is different, much like some people have allergies that are
worse during the spring and summer months and some people do
not. A lot of the allergies people are affected by are caused
by mold spores as well as pollen in the air.
Litigation
We have to face facts and with
the lawsuits on asbestos, lead based paint, and tobacco
companies no longer being in the media headlines there is a real
threat to insurance companies, construction firms, and
remodeling firms. Even with the insurance industry moving to
mold exclusion claims it will not completely protect them form
litigation from homeowners who feel the restoration work or
speed or response may have caused the mold issues. It is in the
best interest of your company to determine mold hazards and
inform the homeowner even on cases where you may not be
responsible for mold clean-up.
Septic or
Sanitary Drain Backups
Another common problem related
to mold are septic or sanitary drain backups commonly referred
to “brown water” damage. While many people treat these as
common water and mold problems they are actually much different
with bacteria growth being the major concern. Special sampling
is utilized both in the initial inspection and post remediation
to verify that all biological contaminants are removed properly.
